# Weather device

> Use the KODE-managed Weather device to compare outdoor conditions with equipment data in Trends, dashboards, and FDD.

**KODE Weather Service** turns outdoor weather into an ordinary KODE OS device. Outdoor conditions appear as standard points next to equipment data. You do not connect a weather API key or install weather hardware for this feed.

Buildings with [Cloud BMS](https://docs.kodelabs.com/products/kode-os/get-started/introduction.md) enabled automatically receive a **KODE Weather** datasource and a **Weather** device. The device uses the `externalWeather` canonical type. Temperature points follow the building temperature unit.

KODE OS manages the datasource, device, and points. You can view them, but you cannot rename, modify, or delete them.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Weather is a building-level device. Select a building from the [sites list](https://docs.kodelabs.com/products/kode-os/sites-and-map.md), then open [Devices](https://docs.kodelabs.com/products/kode-os/devices/devices.md).

## Open the Weather device

**1. Open Devices**

Select your building, then click `Devices` in the left sidebar.

**2. Find Weather**

Search for `Weather` and open the device. The device name is **Weather**.

**3. Review points on Trends**

On the `Trends` tab, select weather points in the left panel. Use `Split Charts`, `Combined`, or `Table` the same way as for any other device.

![Weather device Trends tab showing point categories on the left including Outside Air Temp and Outside Air Pressure checked, Split Charts view for the last 2 days at Raw granularity, and charts for Outside Air Temp and Outside Air Pressure](https://mintcdn.com/kodelabs/c-bfVz_aNeAM7gh-/images/kode-os/devices/kode-os-devices-weather-trends.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=c-bfVz_aNeAM7gh-\&q=85\&s=06f6efa083458160afb03d3949e490c4)

The summary bar on the Trends tab also shows current site weather next to Events, Schedule, and Referenced Devices.

## Weather points

Each Weather device includes **11 weather points**. Points are grouped by ontology category on Trends, the same as other devices.

| Point (display name) | Category | What it provides |
| - | - | - |
| Outside Air Temp | Temperature | Outdoor dry-bulb temperature |
| Apparent Outside Air Temp Sensor | Temperature | Feels-like temperature |
| Outside Air Dewpoint | Temperature | Outdoor dew point |
| Outside Air Humid | Humidity | Outdoor relative humidity |
| Outside Air Pressure | Pressure | Atmospheric pressure |
| Wind Speed | Linear velocity | Wind speed |
| Max Wind Speed Sensor | Linear velocity | Peak gust speed |
| Wind Angle | Angle | Wind direction |
| Precipitation Level Sensor | Level | Precipitation amount |
| Current Weather Code | Label | WMO condition label (for example, Clear sky) |
| Outside Air Enthalpy | Specific enthalpy | Calculated from temperature and humidity |

Current weather conditions update about every 30 minutes. Hourly and daily forecasts are available, along with about three years of historical hourly weather data.

## Platform-managed feed

KODE creates the **KODE Weather** datasource, the Weather device, and its 11 points for buildings with Cloud BMS enabled. The same entities are created when a new building is added or Cloud BMS is activated.

These entities are managed by KODE OS. You can view the datasource, device, and points, but you cannot rename, modify, or delete them. The KODE Weather datasource does not appear in the API catalog because customers do not set it up.

## Use weather with equipment data

Weather points work in the same places as other device points:

* **[Trends](https://docs.kodelabs.com/products/kode-os/trends.md)** — overlay Weather with equipment readings on one chart
* **Device Trends** — compare Weather to a local outdoor sensor from another device using [referenced devices](https://docs.kodelabs.com/products/kode-os/devices/device-referencing.md)
* **Building BI** — add weather points to dashboards like any other timeseries field
* **[FDD](https://docs.kodelabs.com/products/fdd/routines.md)** — configure routines that reference `externalWeather` when the building has the required equipment points and thresholds

> [!TIP]
>
> For a comfort complaint or economizer review, plot `Outside Air Temp` next to the equipment outdoor air temperature or discharge air temperature over the same period.

## Recommended monitoring rules

KODE provides a recommended base set of weather-aware FDD rules. Activate only the rules that match equipment and points at the site. Confirm thresholds before you rely on findings.

| Rule group | Typical equipment | What it helps identify |
| - | - | - |
| Outdoor sensor validation | AHU, chilled water, condenser water, hot water, cooling tower | Local outdoor temperature or humidity readings that diverge from the weather reference |
| Economizer monitoring | AHU | Missed free cooling or excess outside air for the conditions |
| Excess conditioning | AHU, boiler, chiller | Heating or cooling that looks excessive for outdoor conditions |
| Temperature reset monitoring | AHU, boiler, chiller, water systems, cooling tower | Setpoints that do not reset as expected when outdoor conditions change |
| Cooling tower performance | Cooling tower | High approach temperature at maximum fan capacity when wet-bulb input is valid |

Local outdoor sensors remain the preferred input for equipment monitoring where available. The Weather device provides a comparison and can supply weather context when a local reading is missing. Rule findings do not change equipment controls.

Your KODE team can help select rules and confirm required points for each building.
